All About Color
The wonderful world of color can sometimes be overwhelming or even intimidating. How do you know what colors will look good together? How do you pick a color for a project?
At Mountain Meadow Wool Mill, we find many of our customers settle for whatever color the project or the item is pictured in. In this blog article, we are hoping to give you some inspiration to branch out and try something new!
When looking at color combinations, there are six main palettes to choose from. Among the palette, the colors are warm (reds, yellows, oranges) or cool (blues, greens, purples). All the color combinations are based off their placement on the color wheel.
- Monochromatic= colors based on a single hue and its various tints, tones, and shades. In the wheel shown, a monochromatic scheme would use a single outside color and follow its way into the center.
- Analogous= combining colors next to or near each other on the color wheel. These colors are considered harmonious together.
- Complimentary= combining colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel. These colors are considered contrasting or dynamic together.
- Split-complimentary= combining a base color with two colors found on either side of its complimentary color. For example, in the wheel shown, blue as the base with red and yellow as compliments.
- Triadic= combines three colors spaced evenly around the color wheel. For example, in the wheel shown, yellow, rose, and teal.
- Tetradic= combines two pairs of complementary colors. For example, blue and orange with yellow and purple.
In addition to choosing color combinations based off their relationship in the wheel, you can also make color choices based off the mood you want to convey. The warm colors are usually considered exciting and the cool colors calming but here are some more specifics:
- red= passion, excitement, energy
-
pink= feminine, sentimental, romantic
- orange= fresh, youthful, creative, adventurous
- yellow= optimistic, cheerful, playful, happy
- green= natural, vitality, prestige, wealth
- blue= communicative, trustworthy, calm
- purple= royalty, majesty, spiritual, mysterious
- brown= organic, wholesome, simple, honest
- white= purity, simplicity, innocence, minimalism
- black= sophisticated, formal, luxurious
