Nestled below the Big Horn Mountains on Wyoming’s Western Plains, this family-operated mill transforms raw wool into premium yarn, blankets, and apparel, championing the MMW Story. Fully crafted in Buffalo, Wyoming, every piece reflects a commitment to sustaining local ranchers and reviving the American wool industry.

Founded in 2007 by Karen Hostetler, the mill was born from a mission to preserve the ranching culture of the Great American West. Over a century ago, Basque sheepherders settled Wyoming, establishing small ranches in the late 1800s. However, declining wool prices over the past two decades have threatened these historic operations. In 2002, Karen and her partner set out to reverse this trend, opening a full-service mill that offers fair prices to ranchers for their wool.

The mill’s eco-friendly operations use biodegradable soaps and vegetable-based oils, preserving the wool’s natural lanolin for softness and durability. Sourcing fine Merino, Rambouillet, and Targhee wools from Wyoming ranches, the closed-loop process ensures traceability and minimizes waste. Over 60,000 lbs of wool are processed annually, with 50% recycled water, supporting sustainable practices and local economies.

Today Mountain Meadow Wool Mill is the largest full service mill in the West (raw wool enters one side of the facility and finished yarn, apparel, and other products exit the other side). We offer custom processing, custom blending and spinning, as well as 23 different types of yarns that can be hand-dyed in custom colors. We are 100% natural, using bio-degradable soaps and non-petroleum spinning oil and we also recycle 50% of the water we use through the scouring process. Mountain Meadow currently processes over 60,000 lbs of wool a year. We are selling in 42 states and 3 countries overseas and are always looking for more opportunities to expand.
